Michael R. Savona, MD
Michael Savona is a physician-scientist engaged in developing new therapies for cancer patients and is the co-founder of Empath Biosciences. Previously he was Chief of Hematology, Stem Cell Transplantation, and Cellular Therapy at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where he continues to serve as the Beverly and George Rawlings Endowed Director of Hematology Research and Early Therapy Program, and Professor of Internal Medicine and Cancer Biology. His laboratory has enabled translational discoveries in mitochondrial metabolism, and in the clinic, he has served as a lead investigator in the development of several recently approved therapies for hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Savona obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy degree from Davidson College and his MD at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in the USAF at the University of California, and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at University of Michigan where he did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Sean Morrison. He served in the USAF and is a veteran of Operation Enduring/Operation Iraqi Freedom.
